FIFA to expand World Cup to 48 teams in 2026


ZURICH (AP) — FIFA says it can broaden the World Cup to forty eight groups, including sixteen additional nations to the 2026 event.

President Gianni Infantino’s favored plan — for sixteen three-group teams with the highest two advancing to a spherical of 32 — was unanimously accredited by the FIFA Council.

It meets Infantino’s election pledge of a much bigger World Cup, and will assist fund promised raises for FIFA’s 211 members.

With eighty matches as an alternative of sixty four, FIFA forecasts $1 billion additional revenue from broadcasting and sponsor offers, plus ticket gross sales, in comparison with $5.5 billion forecast for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
