Early Life and Education
Bob Mortimer was born on May 23, 1959, in Acklam, Middlesbrough, North Riding of Yorkshire, England. He is the youngest of four sons of a biscuit salesman father and a secretary mother. He attended Acklam High School and later studied law at the University of Sussex. Bob Mortimer graduated with a 2:1 degree in 1981 and moved to London to work as a solicitor for Southwark Council.
Career
Mortimer’s comedy career began in the mid-1980s when he met Jim Moir at a pub in London where Moir was performing as Vic Reeves. Mortimer became a regular audience member and soon joined Moir on stage as his assistant. The duo developed a cult following with their anarchic and surreal show Vic Reeves Big Night Out, which was broadcast on Channel 4 from 1990 to 1991. They then moved to BBC Two with The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer, which ran from 1993 to 1995 and featured characters such as the Stotts, Mulligan and O’Hare, and Donald and Davey Stott. He published a book of his paintings called Sun Boiled Onions in 1999.
Mortimer has had several health issues in his life. He was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 29 and has undergone several operations to treat it.
