Early Life and Education
Sajid Javid was born on December 5, 1969, in Rochdale, Lancashire, to Pakistani parents who had emigrated from Punjab, India. His father worked as a bus driver and his mother was a housewife. Javid attended King Edward VII School, a state school in Birmingham, and then went on to the University of Exeter, where he studied Economics and Politics.
Career
Business Career
After graduating from Exeter, Javid worked as an investment banker at Chase Manhattan Bank. He then moved to Deutsche Bank, where he helped to build the bank’s business in emerging market countries. Javid left Deutsche Bank in 2009 to co-found a hedge fund called Theleme Partners.
Political Career
In 2010, Javid was elected MP for Bromsgrove. He was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport in 2014. In 2015, he was promoted to Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills. In 2016, Javid was appointed Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. Also in 2018, he was appointed Home Secretary. In 2019, Javid was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer.
As Chancellor, Javid was responsible for overseeing the UK’s economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He introduced a number of measures to support businesses and individuals, including the furlough scheme, the Eat Out to Help Out scheme, and the self-employment income support scheme.
Javid resigned as Chancellor in February 2020, in protest at Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. He returned to the Cabinet in 2022, as Home Secretary.
