Early Life & Education
Dr SID was born on the 1st of May, 1980, in Lagos State. He grew up in Lagos State but hails from Delta State, which falls in the South-South region of Nigeria. His father, Justus Esiri, was a veteran Nollywood actor, while his mother, Omiete Esiri, is a fashion designer. He is the second child of his parents’ four children. He attended Nigerian Air Force Secondary School in Ikeja for his secondary school education. Dr SID went further to study dentistry and dental surgery at the University of Ibadan. His love of entertainment was evident during his school years as he participated in plays, dance competitions, and concerts, collecting various prizes along the way.
Career
Dr SID’s general career is premised on music. He had wanted to become a musician right from his infanthood. In 1999, Dr SID signed a deal with the new record label, Trybe Records, as a choreographer. He spent three years with Trybe Records as a backup dancer. In 2002, Dr. SID had his opportunity to perform when he joined Da Trybe and was awarded a slot on the song OYA, which was responsible for the revolution in Nigerian hip-hop in 2002 with Sasha, 2-Shotz, Timi, DEL, and the Trybesmen. He recorded his debut single, Don’t Stop, in 2003, and it spent eight weeks at the top of the MBI top ten. However, his music career had to be put on hold since he needed to take a year off to complete his university degree.
In 2004, Dr. SID earned his dental degree. He relocated to the UK and began working with artists including Felix Duke, R70, D’prince, JJC & the 419 squads, and D’prince. Upon his return to Nigeria, he worked at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital for the following year before going for his National Youth Service in Adamawa State. He combined dentistry and music while working at different dental offices.
In 2005, he started recording a studio album titled Prognosis. At the 2005 AMEN Awards, he received a nomination in the Best New Act category. After three years, Dr. SID decided to give up his dental practice and devote himself entirely to music. He signed with Don Jazzy‘s Mo’ Hits Records and recorded the Mo’ Hits Allstars’ collaborative album Curriculum Vitae (CV), which was released in December 2007. He was a featured artist on seven of the album’s fifteen songs, including Booty Call and Close to You.
Producer Don Jazzy and Dr. SID began work on his debut solo studio album for Mo’ Hits Records. Something About You, the first single from the album Turning Point, was released in September 2009 and is presently climbing the African top-rated music charts. Along with D’banj, Wande Coal, and Kenyan musician STL, he also performed at the MTV Africa Music Awards in Kenya as a member of Mo’ Hits Allstars.
After D’banj and Don Jazzy, the cofounders of Mo’ Hits Records, split up, Dr. SID joined Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records. Additionally, he got three tracks from his next album included on the Solar Plexus compilation album by Mavin Records.
