Early Life and Education
Chinko Ekun, the second child of a family of three, was born on September 13, 1993, in Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria. His hometown is Ikare in Nigeria’s Ondo State.
Chinko Ekun attended both Remade Nursery and Primary School in Igando, Lagos State, and Blessing Nursery and Primary School in Oshodi, Lagos State. For his secondary school education, he went to Baptist Model High School in Ijegun, Lagos State. He attended Obafemi Awolowo University, where he was awarded a law degree upon graduation. He completed his National Youth Service in Lagos State.
Career
Chinko Ekun began fostering a passion for music at the age of 7. His love for pop and rap music began during his freshman year. In 2011, Chinko Ekun posted his freestyle videos on Instagram, marking the official beginning of his musical career. His debut official track, “Ekun,” was made available in 2013. On the songs “100 To Million,” “Bang,” and “Usain Bolt” from Olamide’s “Street OT album” from 2014, Chinko Ekun made an appearance. He made an appearance on Olamide Live In Concert (OLIC) 2014 and performed a freestyle. Chinko Ekun sings exclusively hip-hop music in English, Pidgin, and Yoruba.
The syllables “Chinko” and “Ekun” were combined to form his name, “Chinko Ekun”. “Chinko” is his stage name because he was told he looked Chinese throughout his time in college, and “Ekun” is his first official music.
Chinko Ekun joined YBNL Nation, Olamide’s group, in 2015. On February 25, 2015, he made available his first official songs, “Alejo Oran” and “Emi Na Re,” via YBNL Nation. Only a year later, he and labelmates Adekunle Gold and Viktoh left the record company after their contracts ended. He joined Dubai-based record label Dek-Niyor Entertainment in 2017.
He released “Able God,” a song with zlatan and Lil Kesh, on September 13, 2018. At The Headies 2019, the song helped him win his first Headies award for “Best Street Hop Artiste.” The song was nominated for a 2019 City People Music Award for “Popular Song of the Year.” At the 2019 City People Music Awards, it took home the “Street Song of the Year” honour.
