The BET Awards was established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television Network as an American award to celebrate African Americans in the fields of entertainment. The awards are presented and broadcast live on BET annually.
The BET Best International Act Award African category was created in 2011 to honour outstanding international artists from Africa. The category is aimed at accommodating Africans who are making waves in the global music industry. The Nigerian artists who have won the award since its inception are the following:
1. 2baba (2011)
Innocent Ujjah Idibia, popularly known as 2baba, was among the first artists in the world to win the BET award for Best African Act (Africa) in 2011, the same year the act was established. He won the award alongside his contemporary D’banj, and they won the first edition.
2. D’banj (2011)
Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo popularly known as D’banj was among the first artist in the world to win the BET Awards for Best African Act (Africa) in 2011 the same year the act was established. He won the award alongside his contemporary 2face and they won the first edition.
3. Wizkid (2012)
Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun popularly known as Wizkid won his first-ever BET award for Best African Act (Africa) alongside Sarkodie in 2012. he won the award again as a solo act in the 2017 BET edition.
4. Ice Prince (2013)
Henry Zamani popularly known as Ice Prince was Nigeria’s first artist in history to have won the BET awards as a solo act. He rose to fame in 2009 after the release of his hit song Oleku. He won the award in 2013.
5. Davido (2014/2018)
David Adedeji Adeleke popularly known as Davido was the first Nigerian artist to have won the BET awards on two occasions. He won his first BET award for the Best African Act (Africa) in 2014 and an award for the Best International Act in 2018. He became famous after the release of his hit song Dami Duro in 2012.
6. Burna Boy (2019/2020/2021)
Damini Ebunoluwa popularly known as Burna Boy has won the (BET Award for Best International Act) three times consecutively in the 2019,2020 and 2021 BET award editions.
7. Tems (2022)
At the 2022 BET Awards, Temilade Openiyi, better known by her stage name Tems, won Best International Act. She also created history by becoming the first female musician from Nigeria and Africa to win Best International Act at the BET Awards.
