Early Life and Education
AbdulRasheed Bawa was born on April 30, 1980, in Jega, Kebbi State, Nigeria. He obtained his primary and secondary school certificates from Model Primary School Birnin-Kebbi Road, Sokoto, and Government Secondary School, Owerri respectively. AbdulRasheed Bawa then proceeded to Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 2001 and a Master’s degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy in 2012. He is also currently pursuing a Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of London.
Career
Bawa joined the EFCC in 2004 as an Assistant Detective Superintendent (ADS). He was quickly assigned to the Advance Fee Fraud Section of the Lagos Command, where he quickly established himself as a skilled and effective investigator.
In 2008, Bawa was promoted to Team Leader, and later to Head of the Advance Fee Fraud Section. Acting in this role, he led a team of investigators in the successful prosecution of several high-profile cases, including the conviction of a number of foreign nationals who were involved in advance fee fraud scams.
Furthermore, in 2015, Bawa was transferred to the Port Harcourt Zonal Office of the EFCC, where he was appointed Head of the Office. In this role, he oversaw the investigation and prosecution of a wide range of financial crimes, including corruption, money laundering, and cybercrime.
AbdulRasheed Bawa was also appointed as the Acting Head of the Lagos Zonal Office of the EFCC in 2016, the largest and most important zonal office in the Commission. In this role, he led the investigation and prosecution of some of the most complex and high-profile financial crime cases in Nigeria, including the prosecution of a former Minister of Petroleum Resources for corruption and money laundering.
Also, Bawa was appointed Head of the EFCC’s Investigation Team on the Petroleum Industry in 2019. In this role, he led a team of investigators in the investigation of cases of corruption in the petroleum industry.
In February 2021, Bawa was nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari as the substantive Chairman of the EFCC. He was confirmed by the Senate on February 24, 2021, and was sworn in on February 25, 2021.

Moreover, in June 2023, Bawa was suspended from office by President Bola Tinubu over allegations of corruption. The allegations were made by a former EFCC staff member, who accused Bawa of embezzling funds recovered from corrupt officials. However, Bawa has denied the allegations and has said that he is cooperating with the investigation.
