John Ogu was born on the 20th of April, 1988, in Lagos State, which falls in the South-West geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
Career
Professional Career
John Ogu started out as a youth football player with the Flying Sports Academy, Akwa Starlets, and Akwa United. His senior career in Slovenia officially began on September 23, 2006, when he signed with Drava Ptuj from the Slovenian PrvaLiga. John Ogu made 97 appearances during his four-year tenure and scored eight goals.
In July 2012, Ogu moved to Académica from Primeira Liga. He scored his first goal in the third round of the Portuguese Cup against Ponte da Barca. In November 2011 Ogu joined Leiria, but at the end of the season, the team dropped to the second division.
In September 2014, Ogu signed a four-year contract with Hapoel Be’er Sheva. Also, In November 2015, he scored his first goal for the team in a 4-0 home win over Maccabi Netanya. He was part of the team’s winning the State Championship and was among the candidates for footballer of the season.
On 11 August 2016, Ogu won the Israel Super Cup with Hapoel Be’er Sheva. On 29 April 2017, he scored the winning goal in the championship game against Maccabi Tel Aviv. Ogu was ranked as the number 1 footballer in Israel by 60 sports journalists and professionals.
John Ogu joined Al-Adalah on a six-month deal in January 2020. He made seven appearances before leaving the team. Ogu returned to Israel on February 2, 2022, and joined the newly promoted team H. Nof HaGalil for the remainder of the campaign. He joined Maccabi Jaffa on May 30, 2022.
International Career
Ogu was selected to play for the Nigerian national team in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier in March 2013. He made his debut against Kenya in a 1-1 tie, coming on as a replacement for an injured Victor Moses. In a friendly match against Mexico on May 31 at Houston’s Reliant Stadium, Ogu scored his first goal for Nigeria. Ogu was chosen as one of 23 players on June 9 by Nigerian coach Stephen Keshi to compete in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.
John Ogu was called up on March 18 along with 27 other footballers for the slated friendlies against Bolivia and South Africa. He was included in Nigeria’s initial 30-man roster for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in May of that year. He was a member of the 23-man team for the 2019 AFCON.
