Early Life and Education

Josh Giddey was born on October 10, 2002, to Kim and Warwick Giddey, both former basketball players who represented Australia at the international level. He has a younger sister, Grace, who also plays basketball. Giddey attended St Kevin’s College in Melbourne from Years 7 to 10, before emerging as one of Australia’s top basketball prospects with the NBA Global Academy, a training center at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra. He completed his secondary education at UC Senior Secondary College Lake Ginninderra alongside his full-time training at the AIS.

Professional Career

Josh Giddey began his professional career with the Adelaide 36ers of the National Basketball League (NBL) in 2020, as part of the league’s Next Stars program to develop NBA draft prospects. He became the first Australian player to be a part of the program, turning down offers from several NCAA Division I programs, including Arizona. In his debut season, he averaged 10.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and a league-leading 7.6 assists per game in 28 games played. He also became the youngest Australian in NBL history to record a triple-double, and the first-ever Australian to record a triple-double in consecutive games. He was selected as the NBL Rookie of the Year.

On 27 April 2021, Giddey declared for the 2021 NBA draft, where he was projected to be a lottery pick. On 29 July, he was drafted as the sixth overall pick by the Oklahoma City Thunder, and on 8 August, Giddey signed a contract with the Thunder. He made his NBA debut on 20 October 2021, scoring four points and grabbing 10 rebounds in a 107–86 loss to the Utah Jazz.

On 10 November 2021, he recorded his first NBA triple-double with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 14 assists in a 123–115 win over the New Orleans Pelicans, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to achieve the feat at 19 years and 31 days old. He followed that up with two more triple-doubles in his next two games, against the Sacramento Kings and the Houston Rockets, becoming the first player since Oscar Robertson in 1961 to record three consecutive triple-doubles as a rookie. As of 26 November 2021, he is averaging 12.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game in 15 games played.

Josh Giddey has represented Australia at various youth levels, including the Under-17 and Under-19 World Cups. He was named to the Australian senior national team for the first time in February 2020, for the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers, but did not play due to injury.
