Early Life and Education
Poju Oyemade was born on May 8th, 1968 in Lagos State, Nigeria. He attended International School Ibadan (ISI) before proceeding to the University of Lagos, where he studied Applied Physics and Electronics.
Career
While being influenced by people like Bishop Oyedepo of Living Faith Church and Chris Tunde Joda of Christ Chapel, Pastor Poju Oyemade devoted his life to Christ at a very young age. While he was still a student at the university, he felt called to enter the ministry full-time.
On March 30, 1994, he established the Covenant Christian Centre and was blessed by Bishop David Oyedepo in Yaba, Lagos. The church was renamed The Covenant Nation in 2020, from Covenant Christian Centre. The pastor explained to the congregation as he made the adjustment that the movement had expanded from a “centre” to a “country” of priests. He claimed, “The name Covenant Christian Centre no longer accurately represents what God has in store for us.” We are no longer the centre, but rather a nation of priests, where kings are produced.
Pastor Poju is renowned for regularly sponsoring events like faith seminars, singles summits, the annual WAFBEC conference, financial seminars, and business seminars where Christians are instructed on the Bible’s teachings and how they may be applied to their daily lives. Additionally, he is the host of the television programme “Insights for Living,” which is broadcast on the Revelation Channel (UK), Channels television, and Silverbird.
Ministry
Poju has frequently been referred to as a bridge in the Nigerian Christian community; a connection between the country’s older and younger generations of Christian trailblazers; business owners and professionals; and the government and the governed. In this regard, he organises some major gatherings every year:
The West African Faith Believers’ Convention (WAFBEC)
This yearly prophetic meeting of teachers of the word of faith in the body of Christ worldwide has the aim of instructing and imparting to the younger generation, teaching the foundations of the faith, and passing the prophetic mantle to the upcoming generation.
The International Conference for Pastors, Ministers, Leaders, and Workers (ICPLMW)
The International Conference for Pastors, Ministers, Leaders, and Workers (ICPLMW) is a capacity-building event designed to instil the proper values for ministry work as well as strategic church management.
Pastor Poju is also very open to innovation and uses technology and other mediums to spread the good news of Jesus Christ to people. His online interactions with followers on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and the church website reach millions of people worldwide (insightsforliving.org). He is the host of the regular television shows “Insights for Living” and “The Quantum Leap,” which air on several TV stations around the country and in the UK.
Personal Life
He got married to media personality Toyin Fajuyigbe (Pastor Toyin Oyemade) on February 7, 2015, who is also a dynamic speaker of the word, a filmmaker, and a content producer. He had earlier met his wife in 2005. She is an alumna of Federal Government Girls’ College, Oyo State, and a graduate of the University of Lagos.
Bishop David Oyedepo presided over the wedding ceremony at the Covenant Christian Center in Iganmu, Lagos.
Impact and Influence
The Platform Nigeria
The Platform was established out of a strong desire to help Nigerians develop their personal potential and become more productive in the realms of business and governance. Unavoidably, this will result in national development. A conference called The Platform Nigeria takes place twice a year. The Platform Nigeria is a non-political, non-partisan national development fair that hosts speakers from the highest echelons of the country’s leadership and pioneers in global policy practice on Workers’ Day (May 1) and Nigeria’s Independence Day (October 1) as a global media event.
Global leaders, including Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, the vice president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Caroline Arnold, the managing director of Goldman Sachs; and Anne Marie Slaughter, the CEO of New America, are just a few of the notable people who have been on the programme.
Covenant Capital
The church, Covenant Nation, has launched a project called Covenant Capital. The purpose of the initiative is to offer the church and Covenant Nation entrepreneurs financial assistance and consulting services. The mission of The Covenant Capital is to help entrepreneurs make significant contributions to their local communities through job creation, financial development, and serving as role models.
Controversies
Corona-virus
Many people respect Pastor Poju Oyemade for his use of common sense when solving problems. Oyemade had a different stance on church closures during the coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria than several other well-known pastors. The closing of a physical building’s doors, according to Oyemade, “does not in any way entail the closing of the anointing of the spirit from working.”
Rape Saga
Poju Oyemade demanded justice after Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of COZA was accused of rape by Busola Dakolo. He expressed his grief and sympathy for her. Additionally, he requested that the authorities undertake action and that efforts be made to stop the church from being hurt.
