Early Life & Education

Victor Osimhen was born on the 29th of December, 1998, in Lagos State. He hails from Edo State, a State in the Southern part of Nigeria. He grew up in Lagos, where he had his primary and secondary school education. During his early life, he started playing local area footballs after taking the Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba, as his mentor.

Career

Club Career

At the Ultimate Strikers Academy, which is situated in Lagos, Nigeria, Osimhen began his professional career. Osimhen signed a pre-contract with VfL Wolfsburg in January 2016 after garnering attention for his efforts at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup. The agreement stated that he would begin playing for the team in January 2017.

Osimhen formally agreed to a three-and-a-half-year contract with the team on January 5, 2017, that would keep him there through June 2020. Osimhen made his Bundesliga debut for Wolfsburg on May 13 against Borussia Mönchengladbach, entering as a substitute in the 59th minute after being injured upon his arrival. On the final matchday of the 2016–17 season, Osimhen also entered the game the following week in a crucial relegation match against Hamburger SV.

With the score equal to 1-1, he substituted Sebastian Jung. Hamburg then scored a late winner to overtake Wolfsburg in the standings, pushing Wolfsburg into a playoff for survival against Eintracht Braunschweig. Osimhen was part of the team for both games and made a brief appearance at the end of the second leg as Wolfsburg’s place in the following Bundesliga was assured due to their 2-0 aggregate victory.

Osimhen joined Belgian club Charleroi on a season-long loan on August 22, 2018, after spending 16 appearances with Wolfsburg without recording a goal. He took the place of Kaveh Rezaei, who left after scoring three goals in the season’s first three games and was transferred to Club Brugge. On September 1st, Osimhen made his professional debut against Excel Mouscron, coming on as a late replacement for Jérémy Perbet. On September 22, Osimhen made his complete debut and beat Waasland-Beveren with a backheel to score his first goal.

Osimhen joined Lille OSC in July 2019. He made his Ligue 1 debut for the team on August 11, 2019, scoring twice in a 2-1 victory over Nantes. Osimhen, who assisted on two additional goals in Lille’s five league games, was awarded the Ligue 1 Player of the Month for September 2019. After receiving the most fan votes, he was named Lille’s Player of the Season on June 2, 2020.

On October 2, 2019, Osimhen scored his first goal in the UEFA Champions League during a 1-2 home loss to Chelsea. With 13 goals in 25 Ligue 1 games and 18 goals overall, he was Lille’s leading scorer at the end of the season. Many predicted that Osimhen would soon be vying for the African Footballer of the Year award due to his excellent goal-scoring performances.

Osimhen became the most expensive African transfer to date on July 31, 2020, when Serie A side Napoli announced his arrival for a club-record cost of €70 million, which may later increase to €80 million with add-ons. Osimhen scored his first goal for Napoli in a 4-1 victory over Atalanta on October 17, 2020. After winning, he held up a shirt that demanded a stop to the ongoing police brutality in his country, Nigeria.

International Career

Osimhen won the Golden Boot and Silver Ball trophies in the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, and he was named under the Nigerian under-17 team that won the tournament. He received the 2015 CAF Youth Player of the Year award for his accomplishments. On June 1, 2017, Osimhen made his senior debut for Nigeria in a 3-0 friendly victory against Togo.

Osimhen’s disappointing Wolfsburg season prevented him from participating in Nigeria’s 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign. He began his loan at Charleroi, and Gernot Rohr brought him back for the international break in November 2018. He started in the friendly victory over Uganda.

Osimhen was released from the Super Eagles squad in March 2019 to play for the Nigerian U23 team since they were behind their Libyan opponent by two goals. Against Libya in the rematch, he scored three goals in Asaba. Osimhen was included on both the tentative 25-man squad and the tournament’s final 25-man lineup for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. He came on at halftime in the team’s 1-0 triumph over Tunisia in the match for third place to take the place of the injured Odion Ighalo. At the competition, he played for a total of 45 minutes.

Osimhen was summoned by Nigerian national team coach Gernot Rohr for a friendly match against Ukraine on September 10 in Dnipro Arena, Ukraine, which finished in a 2-2 draw on August 14. In 2022, Osimhem played wonderfully well when he was part of the squad that represented Nigeria in the African Nations Cup that year.
